Layer Cake (a poem for Sunday)

Blue frosting undulates
across the big round cake,
crests peeking out of a sea
dotted with silver buoys
and red lifesavers.

The knife glistens in the sunlight,
approaching the sweet crusted surface
like some kind of confectionery jaws.

It slices into the soft golden sponge
revealing a layer of colors
Green, pink, blue and yellow
separated by thick beige lines.

People hold dainty paper plates
waiting for their serving,
hoping for a chunky slice
of sugar-coated happiness.
