Stumbling into Meaning

I've come to terms with the fact that I'm a seeker. But I've been feeling especially unsatisfied with the daily grind lately - restless and brimming with questions (I can hear a Rolling Stones song in the background). I realize that doing what you want usually requires a shitload of work and tenacity - to create, make, change, means spending time building it. The good news is that it should feel amazing because you're doing something that moves you, something you want to do. It's rewarding and grueling, replete with peaks and lows. The most difficult part of that equation has been trying to figure out what it is I want to do. Life's too short not to do something meaningful. I don't know. In the meantime, I'm on the hunt.

Pit-Stops

Dishevelled thoughts whisk at high-speed winds,
tossing around sand like children in a playground
Dust swirls
Creamed concentric circles in a morning coffee cup
the scent of burnt toast wafts and wanders

Breakfast is served
in a jumbled, mishmash fashion:
scrambled eggs piled on French toast
oozing with golden maple syrup
sitting on top of strips of fatty pink bacon
stretched and posed across blueberry pancakes,
the foundation of a morning mess

Lists pile up like cars on Highway 1
the view of a magnificent baby blue ocean
the only reprieve from exhaust fumes

smoke that twirls upward and around
a teenage girl’s baton stick shimmering
with silver strands that sparkle in the sun’s rays

life is like a three car pile-up,
breakfast at a truck pit-stop diner
meals that merge
customers who dream of good bottomless coffee
Woody Allen scenes and sarcasm
stand out briskly against Californian palms

Flags of the distracted,
Green swaying surrender
to a daily grind that compresses all meaning
into the here and now.

Exhausts choke and cough on granules of dirt
as people fan themselves with magazines
on a hot Hollywood day in my mind.

Built-in Style

Move over Hoxton, Williamsburg, Brooklyn has one on you: the build it yourself skinny jean style. Ge the Hipster with Skinny Jeans, fashion without the effort (and squeeze) here.

I'm loving Paperfoldables, see their blog and beautiful site. Some of my favs below.

Hyp Kyp (the guy from TV on the Radio)

Hipster Grifter (She certainly has an interesting backstory)

Dushi Sushi

A dirty business (albeit funny).

Saatchi & Saatchi London's new work for Labour is a mock-up of David Cameron and George Osborne as 'Jedward' from X Factor (a clip below - I can't ignore the fan love for these kids), warning voters that 'You won't be laughing if they win'.

The image also appears on the homepage of the Labour party website www.labour.org.uk, and ran in a number of national newspapers over the weekend. No holds bar.

Waxing Brand Poetic

Just came across Nick Asbury's Corpoetics, a collection of 'found' brand poetry from the websites of well-known brands. He visited company websites, found the closest thing to a Corporate Overview, and then set about rearranging the words into poetry. It's been written about here, here and here.

It's a great idea and nice way to re-appropriate language from brands.

Some extracts below (more found here).

Pot Noodle

The boy that amazed you.
The date that got you.
The hands that shared you.
The tears that burst you.

The wonder you shared –
now the public eat it,
using spoons, forks, hands.

Lastminute

You’ve got that dreamy look on your face.
You want to career down a mountainside

in a perspex ball: shake up the days,
dazzle the world with your escapades.

You wake up here, in a shabby career,
in a perspex ball, not travelling at all.
